Summer Is a Time to Make Learning FUN!
More than 200 CSC students are participating in educational programs this summer! They're improving in academics, making friends, and having new experiences.
CSC and partner organizations give youth a chance to have fun and a jumpstart on the new school year. We reach young people from whom this jumpstart is crucial: newly arrived refugees, and youth entering middle or high school.
Refugee Summer Success
"Today was a very good day for me."
-- A 17-year-old student from Iran who dreams of becoming an engineer, after a field trip to the Museum of Flight.
CSC and the International Rescue Committee (IRC) offered Refugee Summer Success at Tukwila’s Foster High School in July. This program prepares newly arrived youth ages 5-19 for school in the U.S. This year, 25 young people from Bhutan, Burma, Iran, Nepal, and Somalia participated. These youth were torn from their homes by war, famine or persecution. Some had never been to school before.
The IRC taught students school readiness and English in the mornings. In the afternoons, CSC staff and volunteers offered fun activities with learning built in. Students worked on English, literacy and math while enjoying arts and crafts, games, recreation, and field trips.
CSC also provided lessons on nutrition, street safety, and hygiene. Several partners assisted: Smile Partners provided youth with dental services. Borders gave each student 15 new books of their choice. And each child obtained a bag of clothes from the Kids Without Borders’ clothing bank.
Summer Bridge Programs
"I really loved meeting new friends! I liked having different classes!"
-- A rising 7th grader in the Summer Bridge program at Cascade Middle School
CSC and the Highline School District offered Summer Bridge programs in July to entering seventh graders at Cascade and Chinook Middle Schools. Highline teachers prepared 200 students for middle school success with academic enrichment. CSC added lessons on study skills, friendships, bullying, goal-setting, and college and career exploration. The students made new friends during team-building games, discussions, field trips and other fun activities.
In August, CSC is assisting the Matt Griffin Y in SeaTac with a similar program for students entering high school.
Many thanks to all the teachers, students, volunteers, and partners who have helped make our summer programs a success!
